5 Truths About Grief
September 7, 2022
Grief is an excruciating part of the human experience. It’s something none of us want to face, but we all will face at some point in our lives.
Grief comes from loss. The loss might be the death of a loved one, an unexpected tragedy, a betrayal, a debilitating disease or the end of a relationship. Ultimately, that loss – whatever it was – impacts the remainder of our life. We are molded by our experience and are forever changed.
5 Common Truths About Grief
Grief is a journey – Like most of life, there will be highs and lows. There are countless moments of mourning but also moments of restoration. Moments of hope. Moments of laughter and joy that bloom in our deepest pain and hurt.
Grief makes us question and reevaluate our own identity – It forces us to ask ‘Who am I now?’ .…without this person in my life?….if I can’t trust my partner? ….without the marriage I fought hard to save? ….without my job? ….without a healthy body?
Grief impacts our relationships with others – Your grieving may change or put a strain on your other relationships. As you struggle to cope with the loss, your friends, family and loved ones may pull back or smother as they struggle to know how to best help you in your grieving process.
Everyone grieves differently – The process of grieving is highly individualized. No two people grieve in the same way or for the same amount of time. The goal in walking through grief is not necessarily to ‘move on’ but to find a way to live with our new reality – whatever that may be.
After grief, life will never go back to ‘the way it was’ – Grief disrupts and dysregulates and forces us to adapt. Life might not look the same, but it can be beautiful in its own way again. It also can teach us to become stronger, more resilient, wiser, more appreciative, kinder, more patient. The list goes on.
Don’t Grieve Alone
If you are dealing with grief in your own life, don’t do it alone. Grief feeds on your solitude. It tries to isolate and destroy hope. We can help you find healing and reconnect with the things that can bring you joy and happiness.
